Write About Something That Annoyed You

Sally Philipsen, Portrait of an old woman dressed in mourning, 1900, Denmark

Well then, I’ve had one of those summers. It has rained constantly and the rain washed away many of my garden seeds. I considered building an ark. My neighbour across the street put up a huge political flag. Really?? And to top it all off, I recently found a chin hair that I could have braided (how the hell did I miss that??) Of course, none of these annoyances are big enough to derail me. (I’m a breast cancer survivor, afterall) BUT they still annoyed me. Maybe you can relate. Which is why I think you need to write about something that annoyed you.

You normally have to be bashed around a bit by life to see the point of daffodils, sunsets and uneventful nice days.

– Alain de Botton

Being the dictionary hound that I am – I looked up the word annoyed in my trusty little ancient Pocket Oxford Dictionary (1924):

Annoyed (adjective)

Irritated. Slightly angry. Vexed.

See? Even in 1924 people were annoyed at rain, flags, and chin hairs.

Pretty sure chin hair and mustache hair was one of the reasons the lady above looks a little miserable. Plus, that hat!

Now It’s Your Turn

So, what’s annoyed you this week? Working on your taxes? In-laws driving you around the bend? Is your stove on the fritz?

Did you find a chin hair floating while you were waiting in the drive-through?

Write about it. Have fun with it.

It will help you see the point of daffodils, sunsets and uneventful nice days.
