Do you wish you could write? Or you'd like to get back into writing? You've landed in the right place! I'm Kim Duke, your writing coach based in Canada. I help women start writing for the sheer joy of it!

I just love watering my plants while wearing a long skirt, long-sleeved blouse, and a tie. Oh! And a chignon.
It’s been a longggggggggggg wait for spring to arrive in Canada. Because as much as I’d like to plant my garden in early May? I have to wait for the snow to melt first and for temperatures to be above freezing (because every gardener here has made the eager mistake of planting before the May long weekend and then watching a few hundred dollars worth of plants freeze their little tendrils off!). Gardening is hard work and for many people it’s a task they don’t take on. I’m not one of those people. I love to garden. However, even if you’re not a gardener, I’d bet there are tasks you love doing too. Get your pen and paper out – it’s time to write about a task you secretly enjoy!
Okay, I get it. The word task feels like a chore you had to do as a kid to get your allowance.
The Cambridge dictionary has this to say about the word TASK:
“A piece of work to be done, especially one done regularly, unwillingly, or with difficulty.”
Some tasks I don’t enjoy: grocery shopping; getting my taxes done; ironing (forget it!); weeding; wrapping Christmas gifts; laundry; going to the mall to buy anything, and if I’m honest – I’d rather read than clean the house.
However, my sister skips to the grocery store with joy in her heart. My dear friend, Tina, lives for tax season (yes – she’s an accountant), my friend Deb loves wrapping gifts, my mother-in-law finds laundry and ironing relaxing (???), my neighbour thinks mall shopping is fun; and my oldest niece adores cleaning – she says it is meditational.
See? There’s always a task(s) we detest but someone else would happily do.
Like gardening.
In preparation for the big spring planting and prepping event? I release the long nails I love so much. (Confession. That one hurts a little.) I dig out my gardening supplies: rake, trowel, wagon, hoe, and shovel for starters. I hit a couple of greenhouses and start making lists of all the plants I need, and I buy seeds as if I’m starting my own global seed collection like the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway that stores over 1.3 million seed samples to protect our global food supply.
I kid you not. Such a place exists.
Some people want to see Niagara Falls. I want to go ten miles down into the depths of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
One thing I know for sure. There’s a task you secretly love doing.
It’s time to ‘fess up!
There’s always a task(s) we detest
but someone else would happily do.
Are you the rare person who loves cleaning up after her dog?
Washing your car by hand gives you a thrill?
Organizing your closet brings inner peace?
I know there’s something!
Take 15-minutes and write about it.
As for me? You guessed it!
I’m going to go throw on my long skirt, long-sleeved blouse, and my tie, before I unload some well-aged sheep manure into my garden beds.
Happy sigh.
