Feeling bitter about the lack of writing time?

Filed in: Get Inspired

The fact I found this painting at The Frick seems appropriate!

Oh life, you can be a little trickster at times.

You plant this desire in me to write. It brings my soul such joy! But you also plant the idea that I have to do other things too. Life tasks like keeping my husband, dog, garden, and, relationships alive.

Listen. I have the best intentions. I will write AFTER I get this done. I’ll start writing ONCE I mow the lawn/get groceries/work/walk the dog/take my mother-in-law shopping. You know-the-drill.

And just like that? No writing happens. Suddenly vacuuming or picking up dog poop feels like a priority vs writing about the story rolling around in your head. And I get it – the dust bunnies and dog poop have to go. But the order is all wrong.

Why? I don’t know about you, but I start to feel a little bitter when I don’t have time to write.

At least – that’s the lie I tell myself as I pull on my puffy-laced perfectionist hat.

There’s only one thing that works for me and thankfully it is easier than you think.

You have to write 15 minutes a day at least 5x a week. Rain or shine.

Listen. If you’re giving ten minutes to vacuuming or picking up dog poop? The least you can do is give the same amount of time to your writing each day.

And keep your writing pad/Scribbly book handy. Keep it near the coffee maker. Stash it in the bathroom. I don’t care where you write. Just write. You don’t have to write MUCH. You just have to write something.

Because when you give time to your beloved writing that makes you feel lighter and more connected to yourself and the world? Everything seems better. The words flow from your pen. You don’t want to kill people anymore. And that’s a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say.

If you’re giving ten minutes to vacuuming or picking up dog poop? The least you can do is give the same amount of time to your writing each day.

Now It’s Your Turn

I dare you. Right now.

Throw your puffy-laced martyr hat to the ground and go write something. You never liked that damn hat anyway.
