Do you wish you could write? Or you'd like to get back into writing? You've landed in the right place! I'm Kim Duke, your writing coach based in Canada. I help women start writing for the sheer joy of it!
Me in December! John Singer Sargeant, Nonchaloir (Repose), 1911, National Gallery Of Art, Washington, DC.
Well, if you could see me now, you’d immediately notice how I’m like this woman lounging on her couch. Okay, I’m not wearing a silk gown, but do flannel pajamas count? I don’t even have a pen in my hand although I am contemplating an essay in my mind. The topic: Write about doing nothing.
I love December for two major reasons. Christmas is my favorite season and the tree and decor are going up today. But not before I spend some time in repose in front of the fire and watch the snow falling lightly outside. Did you know it takes over an hour for a snowflake to fall to Earth? Yep. That’s the kind of stuff I’m thinking of today. Why? Because December is the month I always save for myself. I move into delicious and indulgent repose mode. And you’ll soon see why I do it!
This year has been a doing-kind-of-year. Because I live a word-filled life and my passion is to help people express themselves through writing. If you’ve seen lightning zaps from the north? It’s been me in full-on creation mode!
2. I’ve helped six wonderful authors start/write/launch their books this year! Writing a book you’ve always dreamt of doing takes time if you want it done right. I’m a book coach and developmental editor and I help my writers become authors. I’m so blessed!! So far, every author I’ve worked with has become an Amazon bestseller. I’ve proofed over five million words this year in My Book Of Her Own Program and that doesn’t count the writing, reading, and research I do. I absolutely LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE it!!
3. I launched my first writing retreat called Writers In The Woods. It was a huge success! Lovely women from two countries wrote in a Canadian boreal forest historical home for two beautiful autumn days. I’ll definitely launch another Writers In The Woods in September 2025. Watch for details in February!
And now? It’s repose time.
You’d laugh at the massive stack of books and UK Country Living magazines waiting for my pleasure reading. “Kim, haven’t you read enough this year? No. No, I haven’t. On average I’ll read anywhere from 10-17 books in December. Either in the early morning hours in bed; or in front of the fire at night with pear brandy close by.
What else will I be up to? I’ll dive into a recipe file filled with ideas I’ve ripped from magazines and decide what new recipe to make each week. Head out thrifting with a coffee in hand. Lunches with friends. I also see eggnog, Eggs Benedict, and my Mom’s shortbread in my near future. Long mid-afternoon walks in the woods with my werewolf dog who prefers not to be named. (He’s a private kind of guy but he said I could show his picture.) And did I mention reading? So much reading ahead!! WOOT!
It’s funny, isn’t it?
Writing about doing nothing is actually writing about simple pleasures. And these soft simple pleasures are critical for writers. They fill our spirits and replenish our quills. ‘
Write about your version of doing nothing and how it feeds you.
Because writing is meant to be a joy.
