Writers In The Woods

Join me in the Boreal Forest in Alberta, Canada for two beautiful days of writing and inspiration in the woods.

September 13 and 14, 2024
10 Spots Available*

*One requirement. You MUST be a current/ active Scribbly member in one of the following programs!

  • Scribbly 6-month Program
  • Scribbly Level 2 program
  • Scribbly Writers’ Society

Why? It’s important that everyone who attends is on the same SCRIBBLY PAGE. You’re part of the community and you’re already a devoted Scribbly member. (And you understand my Scribbly way of doing things!)

And there’s such a comfort when you know you’re surrounded by like-minded people.

This isn’t a retreat in a huge hotel where you sit for six hours with 700 people in crappy chairs while you watch someone on stage.

And where you don’t get personal feedback on your writing.
Forget that!

Instead, you’ll Mind Marble on new ideas for your writing. You’ll learn and practice writing strategies both alone and with your Scribbly friends. They love Scribbly. They love to write. And they also want a little jolt of momentum!

Cozy. Intimate. Friendly. Inspiring.

Writers in the Woods is designed as a small-group experience.

Transportation from our central pick-up point in Sherwood Park to and from the retreat site on both Friday and Saturday. (Details to be sent to you upon registration.)

Snacks throughout each day as well as coffee/tea/water.

Receive a continental breakfast on both Friday and Saturday.

Be provided with writing materials. (Leave room in your suitcase!)

Participate in writing exercises, discussions and also have alone time for writing each day.

Spend two days with your fellow writers (from 9 – 4:30 p.m. each day) in a beautiful
rural historical cottage in the Canadian Boreal Forest.

Meet other writers who love Scribbly as much as you do!

Receive in-person writing feedback from me about your writing. Feeling stuck on something? Ask away!

Work on 1-2 smaller essays and warm-up writing prompts (Have you always dreamed of writing a memoir? Or you’d like to submit your work to a publication? This retreat is a
great way to get you rolling!)

What’s Not Included In Your WITW Registration?

(Remember. You’ll need your passport to come into Canada!)

There are many taxi and Uber options available at both the airport and hotels.

The hotels we recommend are under $200 CDN/night.

Closer to the event – we’ll send you a list of recommended restaurants to go experience in Sherwood Park. There are many delicious and affordable options and as it is a small city? Everything is only a few minutes away from your hotel by Uber or walking.

When should I arrive and depart?

You’ll want to arrive the day before our retreat, so be here on Thursday, September 12th. This gives you time to get to the hotel, get settled in and go for dinner. And get lots of rest before getting picked up the next morning at 8:00 a.m. MST.

How far is the Edmonton International Airport from Sherwood Park, Alberta?

About 35-40 minutes. (You’ll go through customs at the airport if you’re arriving from out of Canada.)

Don’t count on it. Most businesses accept Canadian currency only. Of course, you can use your credit card and you’ll be charged in Canadian funds. Your debit card may not work here so you’ll definitely want a credit card.

Do Canadian businesses accept US money when I’m there?

Kim, what should I wear?

Fall is a beautiful time of year in Alberta. The leaves start to turn and the weather is usually 62 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius). Bring cozy clothes for writing. Jeans and a sweater. Your favorite yoga pants and jacket. Bring a cardigan or shawl for when you’re writing. Also bring a light jacket and a good pair of walking shoes in case we do have time for a short nature walk. And check the weather for Edmonton online before you fly in case we’re having a little heat-wave!

Can I cancel and get a full refund?

I’ll refund you 100% of your registration fee if you cancel 60 days before the retreat. So that means July 13th, 2024.
After that? You can attend a future Writers In The Woods and use your credit for the registration.

What hotels do you recommend?

Once you’re registered? We’ll send you some recommended hotels that are affordable and where the central pickup and drop-off point will be each day. (And for my American/ International Scribbly members? The hotels charge you in Canadian dollars so you save approximately 30%!)

What if I have a car and want to drive to the event?

We’ll send you the location information once you’re registered and you can GPS your way there. The cottage writing retreat location is about 10-15 minutes away from Sherwood Park. However, keep in mind it is in a rural area and we don’t want you to get lost! (We recommend you take the transportation we’re providing. Because we don’t want you to miss out on anything!)

I’m allergic to everything. Do you have food options?

Hmm. First of all, you’re going to be in the woods. In the autumn. So please bring your allergy meds if you’re allergic to leaves like I am. Regarding food options? We’ll provide some gluten free or vegetarian options as long as we know 30-days ahead. Anything else —we can’t guarantee.
