Do you wish you could write? Or you'd like to get back into writing? You've landed in the right place! I'm Kim Duke, your writing coach based in Canada. I help women start writing for the sheer joy of it!
I can’t help it. And if you enjoy writing – you can’t help it either.
Eavesdropping.
While you wait in line at the grocery store, airport or concert – conversation swirls around you like pieces of paper in the wind .
Some of it you block out and ignore. Other conversations? You just can’t stop yourself from listening.
I’ve heard people talk about their surgeries, lovers, cats, dogs, kids, parents, and grandparents. I’ve listened to tales of woe about their jobs, how much they hate travel and why they decided to blow their diet. (I guiltily looked at the cookie in my hand when I heard that one.)
I’ve heard tender stories about lost friends and family; rekindling a relationship; quitting jobs and starting over at art/flight/nursing school.
I’m always amazed at the beauty within ordinary people.
But I’ve also heard jerks in a restaurant brag about how much sex and money they’ve recently had. Or how rudely someone spoke to their spouse. It made me grateful I didn’t have to look at them across the kitchen table every day and I certainly felt sorry for those who did.
A writer’s life isn’t just writing. A writer’s life involves listening as well.
And in case you’re wondering if you are invading someone’s privacy? You’re not. They were the ones who chose to talk loudly in a public place. And you’re not eavesdropping on purpose. You just happened to be in the right place at the right time for some inspiration.
Remember. It’s not your fault you have big ears.
